Self-actualization is defined as the process by which an individual achieves a more authentic version of oneself; a realization of one’s full potential. Sports, or more specifically, the athlete engaged in a sport, are often seen as a celebration of this process. The Olympian. The champion. The lone long distance runner determined to consistently improve on her performance. Pushing the boundaries of our known human limitations.

This journey of self-discovery is possible if the individual is free to address their personal nature and discover what lies within. We’ve forgotten this. The relatively recent celebritification of athletes, and the mania of modern fan culture, has changed the game.

It is from this perspective that we have arrived at our current position; “Totally Gay for Sports” combines an irreverence for the culture of sports celebrity while wrestling with one of the major issues of our time, equality for all.  -Paul Brainard

Season’s Greetings from epodium gallery

At a time when Western societies overstep the limits of their growth and should switch from expansion to self-preservation, Michael E. Smith’s oeuvre counters the ecological and economic disaster of our era with a materialism of basic needs. Smith has effaced humans from his art and replaced them with a physiology and psychology of things. His objects look like physical reconstructions of emotional vulnerability and violation; his exhibitions, like an archaeology of humanity. The objects produced are taken out of use. They are “abandoned” in empty spaces—haunting them rather than passively occupying them. Up to the point that, like asserted by Michael E. Smith himself, a thing can be more human than a human being.

Setting down a handful of newly works site-specifically produced in the CAPC’s exhibition rooms, Michael E. Smith came up with a score of light and darkness, solid and void, violence and softness, noise and silence that explores today’s viability of art. The exhibition will be reinterpretated at La Triennale di Milano, where it will be on view in March 2014.

epodium gallery presents now three more works by Grimanesa Amorós:

LA PROCESIÓN
MUSIC: Omar Jon Aijluni
COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: USA
LENGTH: 4 min 17 sec
YEAR: 2007

As a child, my mother used to take me to see the procesiones: masses of people dressed in purple wound their way through the streets of Lima, evoking images of waves. I want viewers to see their own experiences, and to realize perhaps some of their deeper, more unconscious attitudes vis-à-vis the visage of death.

REFLEXION OBSCURA
MUSIC: Jose Luis Pardo- Los Amigos Invisibles
COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: USA
LENGTH: 3 min 35 sec
YEAR: 2006

“Reflexion Obscura” is a video about child abuse. It seeks to evoke the viewer’s empathy for the true darkness felt by an abused child. I hope to allow the feelings of each viewer to emerge according to their own experience. In remembering the darkness of being an injured child, they may see the light of being a healthy adult.

BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH
MUSIC: Susana Baca
COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: Norway
LENGTH: 7 min 14 sec
YEAR: 2004-2006

Between Heaven and Earth was originally inspired by my experiences exploring the Fjörds, a large, mountainous region in Central Western Norway, and its parallels with the Patterson Housing Projects in the Bronx, New York. In addition to the commonalities between these two subcultures, the differences are striking.
